ABOUT NCCA
NCCA was originally formed as a forum of communication
for cloggers and teachers in Northern California,
however our membership includes many from Southern
Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Southern California as well.
We get together to share ideas, get help from each other
with problems, sponsor workshops to learn new dances,
share ideas, and promote clogging itself.
The Association was officially formed in March, 1982,
however the seeds were sowed the year before in October,
1981. At that time, Lois Elling’s group, the Blossom
Hill Cloggers in San Jose, were hosting an all-day
clogging workshop. Just before that workshop, several
teachers met to discuss the idea of an association of
cloggers in the Northern California area. That meeting
produced a future first President, Lois Elling,
Vice-president, Matt Manas, Treasurer, Betty Chipps, and
Secretary/Editor, Bonnie Staley.
The next spring we officially collected our first annual
dues of only $5.00 a year (can you believe it?), plus
another $5.00 for a subscription to the quarterly
newsletter, yet to be named. Later the newsletter
subscription price was included in the membership price.
Eventually the newsletter got named, and has since been
known as the Clog-A-Gram. Kellee Ramirez is our current
editor.
One of the first goals of NCCA was to sponsor workshops
and a yearly clogging convention. The first workshop and
meeting was held April 10, 1982 in Lodi, California. Two
clogging dances were taught, 9 to 5 and Foggy Mountain
Breakdown. Since that first year, NCCA continues to
sponsor a workshop each quarter, including our annual
3-day convention in the spring. Upcoming quarterly
workshops and other events are listed on our Events
page. Association meetings are held each quarter at the
workshop.
The Teachers’ Forum (mostly instructors, but open to all
interested members) also meets occasionally to discuss
dances, terminology, levels, teaching problems, seminars
for newer instructors, and everything else that affects
clogging instructors. There is a separate insert in each
issue of the Clog-A-Gram called the Teachers’ Forum
Notes with information helpful to teachers.
NCCA has also published a Dictionary of Clogging Steps,
now in its third edition. This is a compilation of over
2500 steps collected from around the world. The steps
are listed alphabetically, have cross-references, beat
counts, footwork and bar graphing for the more difficult
steps. Here’s where you can order your own copy.
Officers now hold a two-year office, with elections each
year for half the board positions. This way, there is
more continuity from one year to the next. Membership is
open to all interested individuals, and you’re invited
to join.
